So, what has been happening in the world this week?
GOOD WEEK FOR:
The book "Don Quixote", written by Cervantes, which has been voted the best
book of all time by a survey of 100 authors.
Arsenal Football Club, which won the English Premiership title, a few days after
winning the F.A. Cup.
The film Spiderman, which has broken box-office records in the US. The superhero's new
movie pulled in $114m in its first weekend.
The environment, with the news that the British Government is considering a 9p tax on
plastic bags. Supermarkets give away 10 billion bags each year.
Bill Clinton, with the news that he may soon be hosting his own television show.
Reports indicate that Clinton wants $50 million a year to host a talk show and has
aspirations "of becoming the next Oprah Winfrey."
Chinese businesswoman Alice Cheng, who has bought a Qing Dynasty vase, owned by the
former publisher of the International Herald Tribune, for HK$41.5 million (3.6 million
Pounds).
Two men accused of eating human body parts, washed down with a bottle of wine, who have
been freed by a Cambodian court because there is no law against cannibalism, a public
prosecutor says. The two men, both crematorium workers, were arrested last week for eating
fingers and toes of a body they were cremating.
BAD WEEK FOR:
Dogs; according to a new survey they are no longer the UK's favourite pet. 40% said
that cats were their favourite animals, with only 7% choosing dogs.
Swimmers at a leisure centre in Wales; the chemicals in the pool were so strong that
the swimmers' swimsuits simply disintegrated in the water.
An Australian brothel, which has closed down after American sailors exhausted its
prostitutes. The brothel in Perth took 580 bookings in 3 days. The owner said that she had
closed the brothel because the girls were too exhausted to perform to their normal
standards. "I would not sell a man a hamburger f I thought my buns were stale".
New York; according to new documents, in 1900 Germany, under Kaiser Wilhelm, had drawn
up detailed plans for an invasion of the United States centred on attacks on New York City
and Boston. One plan foresaw a force of 100,000 soldiers transported across the Atlantic
on 60 ships.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who has demanded tighter security inside the
government after a burglary in the finance ministry, guardian of the
425-billion-pound-a-year budget.
Some of the world's top surfers, who have been waiting in Tahiti for the Billabong Pro
competition while an airline mix-up saw their surfboards marooned in New Zealand.
The Queen, after a male streaker ran naked in front of her car on a visit to the north
of England. Newcastle police said they had arrested a 27-year-old man and that he was
being questioned.
STORY OF THE WEEK:
A court in Michigan, USA recently heard evidence from the world's worst hijacker. The
unnamed man was on an internal flight from New York when he leapt to his feet, pulled out
a gun and screamed, "Take me to Detroit or you're all going to f***ing die!"
When an air steward pointed out, "Er, we are going to Detroit", he put his gun
away, sat down in a huff, and was silent for the remainder of the flight. He was arrested
as he got off the plane.
