Walt Disney was a man of inexhaustible imagination, a
creator one of the greatest entertainers of all
time. For over thirty years Walt Disney had enchanted
old and young with his whimsical fantasies, his
magical world where flowers sang and ducks got
entangled in tire while repairing automobiles, where
baby elephants learned to fly and where everything and
anything was possible.
Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago in 1901. He
has two eldest brothers, Herb and Ray. Roy, who was
eight and half years older that Walter, played an
important part in his brother's life, first, as
companion and protector , then as advisor, supporter
and eventually as business manager and president of
the Walt Disney Corporation.
Disney started his career as a political cartoonist
for the Kansas City Star. But the firm didn't hold
Walter's interest long. He had a new idea to try - a
series of cartoons illustrating updated fairy tales.
The first film was Alice in Wonderland. In this
cartoon appeared a new hero, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Its main character was more appealing than Alice; the
story line was stronger, the situations funnier, the
characters better drawn. One day Disney came up with a
character and the first scenario for a new series. The
hero wold be a mouse looking very much like Oswald
without the ears and named Mickey. By 1930 the Disney
cartoons and particularly Mickey, had became
immensely popular. Movie houses( or cinemas) had to
include a new cartoon in every program. Mickey Mouse
Clubs were opening everywhere and Mickey an article
in 'Time' magazine became an international celebrity.
Pleased as he was with the overwhelming popularity of
his Mickey Mouse, Disney began to worry in the early
thirties about being trapped in the Mickey series. To
bring some variety to the cartoons, Disney introduced
new characters : Pluto the Dog, then to great winners,
Goofy and Donald Duck.
The first colored cartoon, Flowers and Trees, created
a sensation and brought Disney the first of his twenty-
one Academy Awards, the record number of awards
received by one person in Hollywood.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs permitted on
December 21, 1937 in time to be seen by the large
Christmas holiday audiences. The movie was cheered and
applauded by the same crowd of stars and movies. From
there it went on to an international career that
grossed $8 million on its first run. The film
received a special award - a large Oscar surrounded by
seven small ones.
Soon Pinocchio came into begin. Today it is generally
considered to se Disney's masterpiece. But Fantasia,
which mixture of animated stories and classical music,
was the most original and ambitious project of that
period.
After the war Walt Disney began to feel that fairy
tales and funny cartoons were losing their appeal to
the audience. Moreover, animated features were getting
so expensive to produce that the shorts couldn't
break even any more. So, in 1956 he stopped producing
the short cartoons. Of the long features produced in
early fifties, only Cinderella brought large profits.
Sleeping Beauty did moderately well, but Alice in
Wonderland was a failure. But that time, Disney had
turned to other sources of wealth : adventure films,
including Treasure Island, Robin Hood and other live-
action film.
But Walt Disney has two more great creations which are
enjoyed year round by millions of visitors. They are
Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World near
Orlando, Florida, both being probably the greatest
amusement parks in the world.
Disneyland was opened in October 1955. If you go
there, you will be able to see a reproduction of a
quarter of New Orleans, Western streets with log
cabins and mules in Frontierland , and you will be
amused by an idealized version of a typical old-
American Main street, complete whit ice cream
parlor, curio shops, a horse-drawn trolley and
antique cars. Adventureland offers a safari on an
African river full of hippos and crocodiles;
Fantasyland has its Sleeping Beauty's Castle; and
Tomorrowland its rockets to Mars.
It's a memorial to Walt Disney, who always wanted to
give people good, clean fun and introduce them to the
wonders of human discoveries that fascinated him.
Mostly, he wanted to give happiness to all.
Roommates' Talk
"Why are you putting on my raincoat?"
"Just to protect your new suit"
Customer:"Look here, waiter! I have just found a button in my soup!"
Waiter: "Oh, thank you, sir. And I've been looking all over the place
for it"
Mother:"What is Mary doing?"
Jane:"Well, if the ice is as thik as she thinks, she is skating.
But if the ice is as thin as I think, she is swimming."
