Здравствуйте! YAP Info - May 2003 Welcome to the May edition of the YAP info! This, as you can see, is the electronic newsletter sent from the International Secretariat every two months, with the idea to keep branches, partners and interested individuals up-to-date about what is happening in the YAP world. As the YAP workcamp season gets well under way, this month brings a warm welcome to Gisele, our new International Secretary, into the office. There are several new International Activities planned for this summer and the coming year, including the "Historical Challenge" Project, "Arte Diem" 2003, and the introduction of a new centralised Long Term EVS project - "Unity in Variety, no Discrimination". In the "Life of the Movement" section, you can see that our branches and partners are growing ever more creative and energetic, and we hope to 'see' you in Waslala's online chat to celebrate Europe day (Friday 9th). Finally, please take the time to look at the activities of other platforms and organisations, which you may find of interest for yourself and your members. And if you have any comments, contributions or ideas for the info, then they would be more than welcome. Happy reading! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` 1.News from the International Movement Welcome to Gisele! Watch the Website! The Next CD 2. International YAP Activities ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` EVS - Final Reports, by Virginie The EVS reports for Mexico 2002, Palestine 2002 and Anti Racism have been finally sent to the European Commission. The Final Report of the Final Conference in Berlin will be finished and sent out those days. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Study Visit to UK . . . The report is almost ready! What more to say . . . Just watch this space! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` EVS in the Middle East 2003, by Virginie On the first of May (what a symbolic date !) the team (Silvia, Moira and myself) was happily travelling to Israel and then Hebron, to join all the 10 nice young people volunteering in Haifa, Jerusalem and Hebron for the mid term evaluation of the project. Unexpectedly the airport of Tel Aviv closed its doors on that day, for an unknown period of time !! The evaluation was thus cancelled and then re-organised as planned: Silvia and Moira could finally fly to Tel Aviv while I personally ended in lovely Budapest (don't look for the relation, it is to complicated to explain..!). Lots of you know that Palestine = improvisation.. we experienced it once again ! Anyway as I was not able to do the evaluation, I can't tell you a lot for the moment. The volunteers now left for some days in Amman in order to renew their visas. A report of the evaluation will be very soon available at the IS ; do not hesitate to ask for it. On the other hand, this group of volunteers regularly edit a newsletter on their experience in volunteering in Palestine/Israel. It is called "Voices from Palestine" ; we plan to include it in the YAP website very soon. If you are interested in it right now please contact the IS (2 issues are already available !). If you want some information about the thermal baths of Budapest, contact me !! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Training for Facilitators, by Marina, World 4 U Together Everyone Achieves More 13-20 April 2003, Budapest. Youth Action for Peace in cooperation with the Council of Europe and the European Youth Centre in Budapest ran a one-week Training course for Facilitators which gathered 35 young people of different nationalities representing 17 YAP branches and partner organisations. The main goal of the seminar was to give a new generation of Youth Action for Peace a practical experience in international team work as well as some tools and skills which they can use in their future work as facilitators. These skills include resourcing, team building methods, successful communication techniques, chairing a meeting, making a presentation, and many others. To reach the goal various working methods were used, including expert inputs, sessions in plenary, smaller groups reflections and individual work. Through numerous activities and study sessions participants had the opportunity to evaluate their own functioning in the team and to better understand other people's behaviour. They were also encouraged to implement those tools they learnt in the activities of their organisations, and more concretely through the Youth programme and the exchange of young volunteers. At the end of the training participants were invited to think of possible common projects and some very interesting ideas were put forward such as, for example, promoting voluntary service among those who are older than 25 or opening the branch of YAP in Albania. The seminar played a crucial role in raising awareness on the importance of building tolerance and promoting plurastic values amongst the youth. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` New projects: ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Short Term EVS 2003, by Aniko The application was made in February for this year's Short Term EVS project. We have not yet received any confirmation from the European Commission, but in the meantime, we continue to work as though this project will be approved . . . we are hopeful! The EVS Short Term project 2003 is coming soon...this is the time of preparation. The brochure of the workcamps open for EVS has been available since the begining of April, the prep meeting will take place in a few weeks. Hopefully I will have more news for the next edition of YAP info. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Arte Diem : Peace through Arts 2003, by Alfredo The other day the first "official" meeting about Arte Diem took place in Casa de la Juventud, in Alcobendas, Madrid. The application was made through the International Secretariat in February, and we are hopeful that it will be accepted although it has not yet been confirmed by the European Commission. What we have been doing till now ... we made a call for Spanish participants ... 5 from Alcobendas ... we want to form this group soon, in a couple of weeks or so. Then we will began to work with them on the program. We visited the sports centre of Alcobendas ... there is a hostel where we will stay ... that means sleep and 3 meals. Soon the call for international participants will be ready, and then it will be sent out. The exchange will be similar but different from past years. Different in that we hope for 35 places for Europeans from the project introduced to the European Commission through the YAP-IS but we will open another 15 places for non Europeans with "internal budget" from Casa de la Juventud. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Historical Challenge Project This summer a very exciting project is planned under the umbrella of YAP. The host would be Via Pacis (YAP Hungary) who invites young people from Central and Eastern Europe to particiapte in the so called "Historical Challange: Peace and Understanding in the Centre of Europe" project. The application was made through the IS for the deadline on the 1st February, and, so far, we have no confirmation from the European Commission, but we have quite good feelings about this project . . . !!! Why? Between Central and Eastern Europe's counties there are too many questions still to be answered. It is obvious that although all the countries have some similarities, still this region in the heart of Europe produced - and still produces - a lot of unnecessary hatred and prejudice. The Habsburg Monarch somehow unified the region during a long period, but very often the nations couldn't come closer despite the fact that before and after the Monarchy there have been lots of exchanges between the different cultures. We often use the same words and expressions, and undeniably Central and Eastern Europe has a common face in the world. Unfortunately until recent times, hatred and war has been present here, something which is totally unnecessary and cannot be justified. Young people are easily influenced and pick up stereotypes and prejudices without considering them. This is why it is so important to gather young people who can think together on the roots and possible solutions for the future. What? The participants will participate in the first week on lectures and debates on history and cluture of the CEE region. Different presenters will be invited from countries around. In the 2nd week the participants will reflect the debates into artistic work and they will prepare an exhibition which will be showed during the last week of the project. Who? Participants will be between 18 and 25; active in their organisation or in youth work; have some knowledge of history; have some skills in art; speak English; youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds will also be encouraged to apply. Where? The location is Pecs in the South West of Hungary. When? From the 13th July - 3rd of August ??? In case of questions feel free to contact Via Pacis as viainfo@viapacis.ngo.hu Application forms will be ready and sent out very soon. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` EVS in Mexico As you probably know, the funding for the EVS project in Mexico was not granted, but we may apply again for the deadline on the 1st June . . . if so, please cross your fingers, and look out for good news in the coming months! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` EVS Russia, Belarus and Ukraine As with the EVS in Mexico, the EVS project in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine was not accepted, but again we may apply before the deadline on the 1st June . . . so once again, cross your fingers, and look out for good news in the coming months! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` EVS in YAP International Secretariat The application was made to the European Commission for the next volunteer, to work in the YAP IS from September. We have not so far received any confirmation about this, but we are not optimistic, and if the project is not granted, we will apply again before the 1st June deadline. Fingers crossed! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Intercultural Youth Dialogue : Post 11 September (II) The application was made to the European Commission in February, for the second Intercultural Youth Dialogue Seminar, to be hosted by Baladna in Israel from 21st - 25th September. At this stage there is no further news - we are optimistic that it will be accepted, but there is no confirmation from the European Commission. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` The EVS Unity Project 2003, by Virginie You probably already know that the EVS Anti Discrimination project has changed his name !! Bye-bye "Anti Discrimination" and welcome to "Unity in Variety, no Discrimination" !! A prepteam meeting took place in Brussels beginning of April ; Emese (who is also the steering contact for this project), Melodie (Solidarites Jeunesses), Shashi (World4U), Bogdan (MTP Oradea) and myself draw the first lines of the project. A report, which you might already have, is available at the IS. We hope to introduce the application for the 1st of June deadline to the European Commission. The introduction of a hosting expression of interest (HEI) requested to the local hosting projects participating might slow down the process. Please come back to us if you have any question / doubts / fears about that !! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Training for Lobbying, Public Relations and Campaigning An application was made to the European Youth Foundation for a "Training for Lobbying Public Relations and Campaigning", to take place in the European Youth Centre in April 2004. Since in YAP branches we are doing awareness raising campaigns, it was considered very useful to have a training on how to carry out these activities professionally. This Training can focus topics such as: Communication, image and PR ; How to make promotions ; How to make publications ; Relations with the mass-media ; Information management ; Campaigns . . . ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Seminar on Peaceful Self Determination In April, an application was made to the European Youth Foundation for a seminar on Peaceful Self Determination, to take place near Moscow, Russia in October of 2004. This will come as the follow-up of the Peace Tools seminar, and to finally address the question on Self-Determination and Peaceful independence, which was adopted as one of the priorities of the last Congress. ------------------------------------------ 3. Life of the Movement ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` New Website at Greenway Thailand, by Ingrid Greenway has updated the website. We worked hard and long and are very proud of the result. On the website you can find information on the shortterm camps, the longtermcamps, our homebasecamps and the projects we do. I would like you to pay special attention to the workcamps. On our start page you will find camps in India and China. These camps should be 'done' directly with the organisations in China. Next to that we placed all the infosheets for shorttermcamps on the web. We would like you to use it only within your organisation and not give the address to your participants. To find the address for this section, please contact us. Please take a look at our work, on http://www.greenwaythailand.org Please be critical and if you find any errors, mistakes or you have ideas or suggestions: let us know - info@greenwaythailand.org. Hopefully the website will help you to inform your participants even more quicker and better than before and give you more insight in our organisation! ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Life Inside Solidarites Jeunesses . . . by Lee 1. Solidarites Jeunesses held its General Assembly on March 15th and 16th, with more than 80 people around the table. Besides the activity and financial reports, there was also a debate on the role of "l'education populaire" (community education) in peace work and in the resistance against neo-liberalist ideology. 2. You have all probably heard of the "Peace Caravan", the project of Amit and Aude Weisberger, who will walk from France to Jerusalem during the next two years. Well, an international workcamp in Le Creneau (SJ Auvergne) has just finished building the caravan, and Amit and Aude will soon leave their home town of Beausse for their long journey east. Saturday just gone by, a Festival for Peace in the Middle East brought together over a hundred people from Solidarites Jeunesses and from the surrounding region. If you want to know more about the Peace Caravan, visit www.spcmnet.com/roulottepaix , a website put together by SJ members. 3. Boycotting American and British products is one of the methods chosen to express disagreement with the politics of these two countries, but what is YAP doing and what can YAP do to reinforce opposition movements in countries that prone war to achieve their own objectives ? We would welcome any reflections on this subject to share with our members and written articles to share with the readers of Dialogue. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Waslala celebrates Europe Day, by Alfredo Waslala has organised a chat on internet to commemorate the Day of Europe and reflect on what Europe means for us. We will join youngsters from all over Europe to discuss the ideas, expectations and worries regarding the concept of Europe. We will open several chat rooms to discuss different subjects in relation to Europe (languages, cultures, European Union, perspectives for the future, ...). And we really expect to found all our friends from YAP in this activity !!! So please don't miss it !!! The chat will be open from 7.00 PM to 9.00 PM the 9 of May in the webpage http://europeday.20m.com ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Waslala Beating his Wings, by Alfredo Our organisation has been working a lot in the last months and why don't say it ... working good too. The PIV (Point of Information for Volunteering) continue running and finding pojects for volunteers at the local level. As well we keep our agreement with Casa de la Juventud and we're managing the office of European Programs with them. We're currently preparing our participation in the second edition of the Jazz festival exchange in Berlin. And an Euromed exchange with several mediterranean countries that hopefully will be introduced at the National level in the deadline of first June. We didn't forget the war, important issue for our society ... and we are strongly committed in the "Social Antiwar Platform of Alcobendas and San Sebastian de los Reyes" having been one of the promoters of this platform. Last week we gave a short seminar about European Initiatives ... sadly with a low participation, but lucky it was of good quality and the evaluation was quite positive. And the Europe Day will be our big celebration the next 9 May, with an International chat, an Exhibition about newcomers to EU, and a European dinner-party ... to all o this (yes including the party!!! with the expected strip-tease of Waslala's treasurer) you are kindly invited. The Waslala butterfly continue flying thanks to the warm blow of Mar, Yuki, Esther, Isa, Josito, Ivan, Rafa, Victor, Antonio, Alfredo .. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Nuestra Tierra - Small Point of View, by Juanita When an economical crisis arrives, the solidarity spirit arrives too; the human support gives us the energy to believe each other, believe in ours goals and motivations. We are in Nuestra Tierra, in YAP with our convictions and our dreams... concrete dreams... together. When we had economical problems, the people in Nuestra Tierra said: We are not a money packet, we work for conviction. It is our opportunity to create other options in Nuestra Tierra. We are together... we believe in ourselves.............. and more Some sentences like that offer me, offer us a big motivation, security and happiness. Nuestra Tierra -YAP, Mexico has a spirit. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Booming effect in World 4 U, by Shashi After one of those regular W4U Steering tea-gatherings, in the midst of dazzling Moscow nights we've been walking out of our cozy office building with our heads feverishly booming. This booming effect by itself is very normal outcome of W4U meeting - we always have too many things to discuss, too short time, and always not enough of energy to put in live all we plan. But this time eruption happened. We set on the bench in the boulevard and in the dim-light of street lanterns we wrote a New (Full) Plan of Action of World4U. Trumpets and violins! We'd rather keep it in relative secret (if you remember cardinals Mazarini and Richelieu, by A. Dumas? The former used to say "I will do", and the latter - "I've done:"), and definitely will report what we succeeded to do when we all meet in Romanian prairies in October-2003. But two things, which have direct connection to YAP International shall be shared within YAP Newsletter. Firstly, we bring you most intense attention to the project that was planned during the "Culture of Peace. Peace education in the 3rd Millennium" seminar - the tool-kit elaboration meeting for Peace Education. We are absolutely delighted to report that YES we're arranging this project full-throttle, in Nizhni Novgorod and as it was announced few weeks ago online among us the participants of the seminar interested in the topic we do it 4th -14th of September, and join it together with our Volunteer Photo Exhibition and the Week of Tolerance in N.Novgorod. We strongly invite all those who are interested both of those who participated in Brussels Lobby Talks and those from branches who has interest and knowledge/experience/energy/enthusiasm to contribute. We want to elaborate an international draft of this tool-kit, and then on the local level it can be adapted for the future usage in every participating country. The detailed day-by-day program will be spread among branches and associated groups and friends of YAP in June or maybe even earlier. For the moment we have principal interest of three-four people from the seminar and that's already a great thing!!! Another important issue is that after the discussions within World4U Steering it was decided to apply for the branch status within the movement! So now we are ironing white collars and checking with tie colors ?, to be fully prepared for Autumn! We have also few little family joys in life - tomorrow Morten Sigsgaard (the Danish participant of our Brussels seminar and MS-volunteer) comes to W4U to replace our Incoming Archangel Dina for this season and to help us in many ways with our set of seminars on non-violent conflict resolution. Another promising person is famous Klara from INEX-CZ, who perhaps can come over in Jan-2004 and stay with us through the season. Isn't it cool? ISN'T IT BOOMING?! ------------------------------------------ Окончание в следующем выпуске.
