(Shortwaves)

(Algeria)
7150, April 18 at 0542 with declamations in Arabic. This would be the Qur`an service from Algeria, via Sines, Portugal, at 04-06 and 21-23. One of the better signals on 41m

(Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 20/04/2008)

(Anguilla)
6043.39, University Network, 0115-0125+, April 18,
very weak spur from 6090 with the usual religious programming.
(Brian Alexander, PA, USA - dxldyg 19/04/2008)

(Angola)
4950, Angola, R.Nacional Angola, Mulenvos; 18-Apr. Portuguese 2102 OM anmts "Desporto..." sports news programme, 2106 "utilida publica da RNA" programme about

events, obituary anmts, 2108 OM e YL talks, 2115-2125 local pop music. Tune in CW QRM, fady and unreadable, but signal improved from around 2115, SINPO at 2125

was 33433, readable (Lucio O.B., Embu, Brasil - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

4950, Radio Nacional, 0021-0030 With two individuals in Portuguese
comments, both females. With a TTY on the freq causing interference, it's
unknown if that is a harmonic
or actually on the freq? Either way, Radio Nacional is doing well with
getting to South Central Florida. Comments continue. (Chuck Bolland, Clewiston, FL, USA, 19/04/2008)

15476, LRA 36 Radio Nacional Arcangel San Gabriel, 1900-1920.
(M. Mendez, Lugo, Spain - hard-core-dx 19/04/2008)

(Argentina)
11710, Argentina, R.Argentina Exterior, General Pacheco; 18-Apr. Japanese 1050-1200 OM and YL talks and some Tango music selections, wonderful Astor Piazzola at

1119. Some 11720 splatter, from 1100 weak underneath QRM from Chinese station, around at 1115 SINPO 54444 (Lucio O.B., Embu, Brasil - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

(Burma)
South Asian music on 11540, April 17 at 1419, fair with deep slow fading. Missed any announcement around 1430 since I was mainly listening to KUNM`s excellent call-in

show, Thursdays at 1400-1500. 11540 gone at 1438 recheck. Per Aoki this is RFA Burmese via Tinian at 1330-1430 (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

(Bolivia)
4865, Bolivia, R Logos, Santa Cruz; 17-Apr. Spanish 2239 Cuban Salsa music, 2241 OM and YL talks, 2247-2251 romantic Spanish music. R. Logos won the battle

agaisnt Brazilian Stations on 4865 (i'm not certain if the stronger R. Alvorada de Londrina-PR was on) for few minutes, fady and unreadable, 22422 (LOB-B).
(Lucio O.B., Embu, Brasil - dxldyg 18/04/2008)

4716.69, Radio Yura, Yura, 0135-0153*, April 20, Spanish
ballads. Some Bolivian music. Spanish announcements. ID at 0151.
Fair to good signal. Reception much better than usual.
(Brian Alexander, PA, USA - dxldyg 20/04/2008)

Bolivia, 6055.10, Radio Juan 23,(Tentative) 1000-1020 Noted a station here
in Spanish language programming. At 1008 a male comments briefly until 1009
when music is presented. The format consists of a song then a few comments
and so forth. Signal mixing with Japan's Nikkei on the same freq. Don't
know if the Bolivian is actually on 6055.10 KHz, it is just that, that is where I
hear it best, which turns out to be just poor to threshold. (Chuck Bolland, April 20, 2008)

Bolivia, 5952.46, Radio Pio Doce, (pres)1022-1040, At tune in, noted music
until 1024 when a two males comment in Spanish language. Comments continue until 1030
when a time tones are heard which could have been from someone else nearby.
At 1031 back to music. Signal was poor. (Chuck Bolland, Clewiston, FL, USA, April 20, 2008)

(Brasil)
4915 ZYF360 Rdf Macapa; 0419-0431+, 16-Apr; Mellow tunes
including version of Perfidia; M in PP w/extended ID 0428-0431+,
then music continued--more pop style; all in PP. SIO=333, swiper QRM
(H. Frodge, MI, USA - CumbreDX 18/04/2008)

4905.10, Radio Anhanguera, (pres), 0005-0020 Just a male in steady
Portuguese Language comments. He sounds like he is preaching or talking politically.
One or the other, can't be sure? Signal is fair to poor while the noise fades up
and down too. (Chuck B., Clewiston, FL, USA, 18/04/2008)

11780 RNA-Brasilia 0320-0340+ 19 April. "Madrugada
Nacional", "Madrugada Noticias" loud, but throwing spurs +/- 60 kHz
on 11840/11720. 0525 20 April recheck had signal not quite so strong,
with
very noticeable xmtr hum and spurs on 11850/11710 (11840/11720 audio
fairly clear, 11850/11710 very distorted) (Dan Sheedy, Canada - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

(Vatikan)
RV`s printed A-08 schedule folder, metermarked 8 April, has arrived in the P-mail. At first glance the transmission grid looks quite explicit and well-organized. Each target

area (or rather azimuth sector) is indicated by a letter from A to Z, conveniently, now 26 of them! These are in two groups, one close-in for Europe, and the other far-out for

the rest of the world. Explained thus:

``Capital letters following frequencies indicate the radiation direction of the antennas. Omnidirectional service when capital letters are omitted.``

MW and FM frequencies have no capital letters, tho both COULD be direxional if desired or needed. But some of the SW frequencies are also letterless, and I know they

are NOT omnidirectional.

They are instead relays from sites other than SMG, which VR refuses to acknowledge! That would require more maps, each centred on a relay site, inconvenient. But does

VR also not want its uninformed SWLs to know that they have entered into relay deals with a number of other broadcasters, some even ex-Communist? You would never

know about them by looking at this folder.

Claiming to be omnidirexional from Vatican rather than direxional from Sackville, for example, are 9610 and 6040.

Also letterless is Chinese at 1230-1315 on 6020 and 9900. 6020 we know is RVA Philippines, as it ruins reception of R. Australia even here during that semisesquihour, as

reconfirmed April 17 at 1240 and 1254 chex. Per Aoki, 9900 is Novosibirsk at 111 degrees. There are quite a few others which I will not go into here, as anyone can look

them up in the online references.

More anomalies in the RV sked: certain transmissions are marked with a Maltese cross, denoting they are liturgies, such as 0730 Mass in Italian on Sundays and Holy

Days. Why, then, is the Mass in Latin, daily at 0530, not so marked?? A throwback to the old days when Latin was suppressed? Surely the traditional Latin mass should

now overshadow those in mere XXI century vernaculars.

This is also an opportunity for me to repeat my perennial complaint that VR never shows the END time of transmissions. You may guess that they are about 5 minutes

before the start of the next transmission, but there is not always any next transmission in a given group! And not all languages in a given group are of the same length.

The text article in the folder is about Travelling with the Pope, as he is currently in the USA, and many other visits abroad are scheduled this year. Refers to

http://www.radiovaticana.org where you will find the times of live broadcasts. I have already checked the frequently updated Special Broadcasts page

http://www.radiovaticana.org/coorpro/entrasmisspec.htm – a link to which is not easy to find on their web pages, and not given in the folder either.

Sometimes papal visits provoke special SW transmissions on special frequencies, but none at all shown for the current visit to USA, just lots of special live transmissions

on satellite and on MW, FM in the Roma area (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

Великобритания (U.K.)
At about 0306-0320GMT I heard BBC World Service Coming in with a very
strong signal on 6145. Also heard very faintly Romania coming in on
6150 about 0300-0305 GMT with some slop over from BBC world service.
(R. Lewis, Forest, USA - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

6145 is unfortunately for one hour only, via Ascension. At 0400-0430 switches to Cyprus, 0430-0530 to South Africa; not sure if the latter two are in English, but not so well

heard here anyway. (Glenn H., OK, USA - dxldyg 21.04.2008)

BBCWS Spanish via Furman, 9410, Monday April 21 at 1235 was doing its usual music-only fill, this time classical with solo violin, then a movement from Mendelssohn`s

wonderful Octet, 1248 something contrasting on guitar, 1251 into a vocal piece. VG signal makes this valuable for the music on SW, but sometimes it`s pop (Glenn Hauser,

OK, USA - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

Sunday April 20 started looking for Aló Presidente relay from Venezuela. At 1405, 13750 with very good signal, mentioning ``Venezolana de Televisión`` ID just as I tuned in,

but then to RHC IS and theme, back to RHC IS, but it was marred, hiccuping three times after 1408; at 1410 it even went off-key briefly. Was this on a tape momentarily

off-speed? 1411 to martial Cuban NA, 1412 more IS with hiccups, then the ``gentler, softer`` Cuban NA version which is more of an RHC theme song. 1413 sign-on

announcement as RHC, giving these frequencies: 13760, and from 9 am ``hora normal de Cuba`` [which is not in effect now, instead DST], 13680; 11760, 11805, 12000,

9559, 9600, 6000, 6180, and from 9 am, 15370. Yes! The announcer said `9559`, not obvious to him that this was a typo for 9550! Sounds like this is what should have run

only at *1100 for RHC itself.

At 1415, fragment of Fidel speech about Venezuela, ``El Pulso de la Historia`` implying Chávez is his historical successor [as a dictator for life], by way of introducing the

usual RHC run-up program to ``A,P``, ``Mundo Siete``, week in review, starting with oil topping $110/barrel.

Recheck at 1432, Mundo 7 still going and now I looked for parallels. Found 11875, 11670 and at 1437, 13680. If on 17 MHz, not propagating. All three were much weaker

than 13750. All of them had an echo with 13750, not exactly synchronized, but not exactly synchronized with each other, either. Recheck at 1501, Venezuelan-sounding

music but RHC ID, and starting another RHC fill program, ``Somos Jóvenes``.

Too busy to keep checking until I retuned 13750 at 1601, just in time to hear the Cuban (martial) NA ending, and to open carrier, as apparently the service was just signing

off. Did Hugo ever appear? Doubtful, or he would have gone on for another 2 or 3 hours. Chávez can stand up his Cuban psychophants with no repercussions. They`ll be

back next week for more (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

(Gabon)
Noted on 16 April at 1840 the Gabon transmitter
on 4777 is putting out weak/fair level harmonic
on 9554. Mainly only a carrier as the fundamental
was low modulated. Simultaneously signed off
at about 1900.
(Jari Savolainen, Kuusankoski, Finland - dxldyg 17/4/2008)

(Guatemala)
4052,5, Radio Verdad, Chiquimula, 0520-0602*, 16-04. Sigue
25322 (M. Mendez, Lugo, Spain - hard-core-dx 19/04/2008)

(Germany)
German domestic radio on 49 and 41 mb, like 6005, 6030, 6085, 6190, and 7265
kHz, never achieved channel/adjacent protection on ITU/HFCC registrations in
the past. ARD entries reached always the mark "only for information"
[represented by DWL FMO Mr. Scholz act, I guess].

GERMANY [and non] Radio 700, Germany testing on 6005 kHz April 14, 2008 The
German private broadcaster Radio 700 has started test transmissions on 6005
kHz. The transmitter is located in Kall-Krekel and the power is 1 kW. The
station broadcast also on FM, in cable and in Internet. The start of regular
transmissions is planned for May 2008 (Radio 700 via Reijo Alapiha, Finland)

Radio 700 website (I think!) says 6005 kHz was allocated to them in November
2007, is used for special broadcasts and will expand duration from early
2008:

This will conflict with other 6005 broadcasts, depending on the hours, such
as R. Tirana (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
(W. Bueschel, Germany - dxldyg 20/04/2008)

(Dominican Rep)
5009.79, Radio Cristal Int. 2345-2359*,
April 18, Spanish talk. Announcements. Promos with sound effects.
Presumed. No ID heard. Fair signal, but some announcements with
low modulation. (Brian Alexander, PA, USA - dxldyg 19/04/2008)

(Zambia)
4965, Radio Christian Voice, 0030-0040 At tune in Religious Singing
by a choir.
At 0040 a female comments in English then back to music. Signal was fair,
but the noise is tremendous. (Chuck Bolland, Clewiston, FL, USA, 19/04/2008)

6165 ZNBC-R.2 0242-0252 19 April. Fish eagle IS & national
anthem quite clear u/ RNW's SP "radionovela", but opening
announcements pretty much buried. (Dan Sheedy, Canada - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

(Zimbabwe)
3396 ZBC-Gweru (tent.) 0230-0250 19 April. Mostly non-
stop pop/romantic songs, occ. DJ yak in local language. (Dan Sheedy, Canada - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

(India)
5010, AIR, Thiruvananthapuram, 1650-1720, 17-04, musica hindu,
locutora, comentarios, veranculo e ingles. 25432. (M. Mendez, Lugo, Spain - NoticiasDX 17/04/2008)

AIR with music, 9425 @ 1700z via Bangalore,
500kw @ 18 degrees. About 4000 miles in darkness,
about 5000 miles in daylight. Local mid-day at about
1830z.Some audio flutter but relatively stable signal
(Jerry L., TX, USA - CumbreDX 20/04/2008)

INDONESIA
4604.94 RRI Serui 1259-1320 Apr 19. Local ID, then
predictable sequence of SCI, Jak relay, then back to local programming
(Indo vocals) around 1315. Fair. (J. M. Wilkins, CO, USA - CumbreDX 20/04/2008)

7270 Wai FM via RTM Kuching 1239-1303 Apr 17. Presumed with
familiar chanting to 1257, then YL ancr and "IS" on local instrument at
1259, followed by usual 2 pips and Kuala Lumpur news relay in Bahasa
Malaysia. Rough in QRM (J. M. Wilkins, CO, USA - CumbreDX 20/04/2008)

(Spain)
REE IS on 13720, April 21 at 1256, but only heard a few iterations so was not hypnotized before went to open carrier and off; fair signal. This transmission to Europe

supposedly runs until 1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

(Canada)
CRI in Chinese, very weak on 15260, April 17 at 1415, // and synchronized with Sackville on 15220. This could be easily explained as a leapfrog mixing product over

Sackville 15240 Sweden relay --- except 15240 was not on the air at that time! Furthermore, CRI is on 15260 via Sackville, before, not after 1400. So I guess this 15260 was

a plain old spur, or maybe a transmitter that was not turned completely off. Nothing to match on minus 40 kHz from 15220, 15180, other than a very weak carrier from

something (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

(China)
4900 Voice of the Strait-Fuzhou (tent.) 1225-1305+ 17 April.
Fair to very good in CH dialect (Amoy listed) with ads, Chinese
contem-pop, 5+1 pips at TOH & partial ID: "haixia, guangpo diantai",
also what sounded like part of a URL in EG "V O S..", back to Chinese
AC/pops and phone calls.(Dan Sheedy, Canada - dxldyg 18/04/2008)

(Korea)
9650, Voice of Korea, 1020-1030 Noted a male in Japanese
Language comments who is joined by a female, shortly. At 1124, Choral music
presented. Signal was fair. (Chuck Bolland, Clewiston, FL, USA, 17/04/2008)

2850.03 K.C.B.S. Pyongyang 1237-1246 Apr 20. Stirring patriotic music, instrumental and vocal. Fair but fading fast.
(J. M. Wilkins, CO, USA - CumbreDX 20/04/2008)

KBSWR via Sackville, 9650, Monday April 21 at 1240-1242 with last part of ``Let`s Learn Korean``, explaining what ``imnida``, so often heard at end of Korean sentences,

means, just what I wanted to know: ``it is``, the polite form of ``ida``. Also pointed out that there are postpositions which make it clear which word is the subject. BTW, in

recent item about NZ 9655, I referred to 9650 as CRI, but before 1300 it`s KBS relay (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

(Costa Rica)
REE relay, 5970, 1237 April 17 in Spanish, phone interview, muffled modulation, confirmed by // 15170. Mixing with something in Korean, which by 1251 had gained the

upper hand. That`s YFR via Komsolomsk, per Aoki. Strangely enough, this Cariari relay was not 1 kHz off frequency but almost on-frequency, producing a SAH varying

slightly around 5 Hz. This REE transmission is scheduled M-F only at 1100-1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

(Marocco)
RTM 15345 had a nice semihour of Arab music as I took a seminap, April 19 at 2130-2200, good signal. There was a bit of a SAH but no AH as usually is detectable from

Argentina (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 20/04/2008)

6010 Radio Mil 1144-1204 Apr 14. Talk format w/frequent
interruptions for ads; canned ID at 1159, but the synthesized voice was
difficult to understand; back to talk at ToH. Fair at best.
(J. M. Wilkins, CO, USA - CumbreDX 20/04/2008)

(Niger)
9705, Niger, Voix du Sahel-Niamey(pres.), 18-Apr. French 2204-2218 Alternating short OM talks and classic Reggae music, seems all this selection was Bob Marley.

Some 9710 QRM, 23332 (Lucio O.B., Embu, Brasil - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

9705, LV du Sahel, Niamey, 2215-2300*, April 19, vernacular
and French talk. Local African tribal music. Afro-pop music. Koran at
2254-2258 followed by closing announcements, short IS on local flute
and National Anthem. Fair signal. Weak co-channel QRM from India
at their 2244 sign on. (Brian Alexander, PA, USA - dxldyg 20/04/2008)

(Nigeria)
4770, Radio Nigeria, 2250-2300 With music to begin with, then a
period of English comments from local citizens of Nigeria with opinions about
current conditions. The commentator was a woman. At 2258, the signal drops off
the air suddenly and didn't return to the air. Until then the signal was fair.
(Chuck Bolland, Clewiston, FL, USA, 18/4/2008)

(New Zealand)
RNZI, April 17 at 1242 check, could not detect DRM on 6165-6170-6175 as scheduled, nor AM on 9655, tho there was an extremely weak carrier in the skirts of Sackville

9650, whilst RA was inbooming on 9580 and three lesser 31m frequencies, so I wonder if RNZI was off the air, or on wrong frequencies again? Not found on 7145 either. But

at *1300, good on new 6170 AM with news. Meanwhile, ex-6095 had weak Firedrake audible against BBC, // 6085. 6170 still holding up at 1350 with mix of pop and Maori

music, but losing out to noise level by 2 am news at 1400, which is 125 minutes after sunrise in Enid today (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 17/04/2008)

6170 RNZI 1312-1325+ 17 April. "Dateline Pacific" with
Pacific islands news (American Samoa, Fiji, PNG, Vanuatu), good
signal but crunchies from CNR1-6175.(Dan Sheedy, Canada - dxldyg 18/04/2008)

I am wondering where RNZI is before 1259 when it comes up on 6170 in AM with IS, TS and news; April 18 a few minutes earlier I could not detect it on 9655, and certainly

not on 7145, nor any sign of DRM noise on 6165-6170-6175 as scheduled. I asked Adrian Sainsbury and he says the break in DRM service now starts at 1200 instead of

1258, as was still displayed on their online schedule, but they were on 9655 AM, according to logs. Later that day I confirmed on webcast that Mailbox does appear UT

Friday at 2035; it was he doing the show alone, but wrapped up already at 2046, so not sure when it really started; it usually runs from 20 to 25 minutes.

Checked again April 19 at 1248 and presumed RNZI could be detected on 9655 tho very much under CRI/Sackville 9650. I suppose the NW beam from NZ during this hour

makes a big difference over here to the NE.

On 6170 Sat April 19 at 1330 I heard the tail end of a program about the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and their Bible translation work in Papua New Guinea, languages

in danger of going extinct. Per schedule, this was Tagata o te Moana, a weekly programme for which audible is available, so I ondemanded it. This segment starts 25:40

into the file at http://www.rnzi.com/audio/tagata.mp3 which should be available until April 25 (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg 20/04/2008)

RNZI Anomaly Watch: April 21 at 1304, after hearing AM on 6170, tuned up to 7140-7145-7150 and discovered DRM was on during supposed silent period. A few minutes

before 1300 I had already scanned 41m and did not hear it then, but AM on 9655 was presumably the weak signal aside Sackville 9650 (Glenn Hauser, OK, USA - dxldyg

21/04/2008)

(Palau)
9965 T8BZ (p), Palau, 1152-1200, April 19, Chinese,
music, announcement by male, music, announcements by female, 22432
(Arnaldo Slaen, Argentina - playdx2002 20/4/2008)

7324.96 Wantok Radio Light observed back on tonight at
0914 UTC after an absence (I last heard them 13 March but a DX colleague
says he's missed them since the beginning of April) with station
identification and giving "positive uplifting messages". Fair signal and
best on LSB to avoid a loud Firedrake transmission on 7330.
(Bryan Clark, Mangawhai New Zealand - dxldyg 21/04/2008)

(Peru)
4775.04, Radio Tarma, 0950-1000, At tune in, noted flute type music
until 0954. At that time thought I could hear a male in Spanish comments in the
noise. Then back to music. Signal was poor. (Charles Boland, Clewiston, USA, 17/04/2008)

4790.2, Radio Vision, Chiclayo, 0518-0535, 16-04.
Salvacion", locutor, comentarios. 14221. (M. Mendez, Lugo, Spain - hard-core-dx 19/04/2008)

Radio CRET which acc. to WRTH 2008 is inactive - is now on the air again -
with test transmissions on its original MW frequency of 1080 kHz. What is
more encouraging is that they emit a strong second harmonic on 2159.92 kHz.
Monitored in Guatemala at 0230 UTC (Sunday night) with a strong signal which
I anticipate will easily make it to North America and perhaps even Europe.
prueba". They also announced tel. 26710317 in case you catch the station and
want to inform them about reception.

Radio Imperial which used to broadcast on 17 MHz till quite recently has
neither transmitter nor aerial left at the stations premisis in the
outskirts of Sonsonate in Northern El Salvador, so I dont think that it is
very likely they will ever return. They now operate on 810 kHz with 500W
only. (Stig Hartvig Nielsen, Guatemala - hard-core-dx 19/04/2008)

See below: The Croatian transmitters on 774, 783, 1125 and 1143 have
been closed down as of this month.

Still on air is Zadar on 1134 with Glas Hrvatske programming. 1557 with
Radio Osijek could still be on air as well, at least
http://www.hrt.hr/hr/radioosijek/Index.htm still shows it, and I think
the jumble I have right now on this frequency includes a third signal
besides Fontbonne and Sitkunai.

The 1125 transmitter was infamous for producing strong mixing products
with one of the co-located shortwave transmitters, run in the 49 mB.
These fell in the 60 mB, and back in the nineties even a professional
monitoring service mistook the mix for an intended transmission.

here are ALF's loggings from the last weekend.

Interesting is the Royal Navy Sea Cadet Corps FEC sunday net.
They send their messages to "MFJ99 AC ACF BLG NLD"
MFJ99: All Sea Cadets in the UK
AC: All Air Cadets
ACF: All Army Cadet Forces
BLG & NLD: Belgium & Dutch Sea Cadets
But I never read about any Belgium Sea cadet station taking part in that
net, only the Dutch ones with vessel "PHAS".

8193 kHz net? Could be ALG MIL, at least they use these kind of
callsigns for their voice comms...

First time "ALE-unids":

5680 kHz - 6002
5056 & 6848 kHz - BRV to CHR.
6848 kHz is a known CHL Navy channel,
and they use to have such 3-letter idents. But these 2 are so far
new ones - and
two new ones on the (for me mystery) "F001-Net" on 6583 kHz: 8023 & 9021.

BTW, the ident SSS on the GEO MIL net seems to be a kind of collective
callsign. 4BR called SSS on 5101. That call was answered by TLO,
one of the new players of these LF3/LF4-KG3/KG4 nets.

Any further comments to any of these loggings?

73, Tom
