Use an appropriate form of the phrasal verbs below to fill the gaps.

I was at a dinner party the other evening, and after dinner the conversation turned to the issue of global warming. Everyone had an opinion on the matter, and the discussion became quite heated, particularly when we started arguing about what should be done about the problem.

As I've said, everyone had an opinion, but when it came to the details of the problem, we didn't really know what we were talking about; we were just quoting things we'd read in newspapers that seemed to support our differing opinions. No one had actually READ UP ON the subject. At this point, a chap who had been fairly quite started explaining the scientific basis of the problem. He CAME ACROSS as a very knowledgeable man - he'd studied environmental science at university, and he spent quite a while telling us about Carbon Dioxide and the other gasses that caused the 'Greenhouse Effect'. The problem was, he was using language that was so scientific that most of us didn't fully understand what he was saying, and with the effects of the wine we were drinking, and our unwillingness to back down[1] from the opinions we'd already expressed, he was unable to GET his ideas OVER.

Eventually, of course, we'd had enough of arguing so agreed to disagree, and the conversation turned to less controversial subjects.

At the end of the evening, we left the dinner party and got in our cars to drive home. Most of the guests had impressive cars like those fashionable 4-wheel drive things with huge engines, but the environmental scientist (of course) had a bicycle. As I started the engine of my own old, badly-maintained car, and watched the cloud of smoke slowly disappearing behind me, I couldn't help thinking that perhaps the issue of global warming and Carbon Dioxide omissions had been fairly accurately expressed at the dinner party - those who know what's happening seem to be unable to TALK ROUND those who are contributing to the problem, partly because of language problems, but partly because we don't always want to listen. It made me wonder whether we, or our governments, will ever GET ROUND TO doing something about it.

[1] to accept someone else's point of view, or agree to do what they want, even though you don't want to
