  • Elton John, who has signed a Ј36m deal to play 300 concerts in Las Vegas over the net two years, making him the world’s highest-paid concert performer.
  • Toyota, the Japanese car maker which has launched a car that can park itself without the driver having to touch the steering wheel.
  • Gibbs Technology in London , which has unveiled a new form of transport - a high-speed land and water vehicle which transforms from a sports car to a jet-propelled boat at the touch of a button. The Aquada is designed to reach speeds of 160 km / hour on land and over 50 km / hour. And the price? US$234,000 !
  • The magician David Blaine, who is to be suspended in a glass box over the River Thames in London for 44 days with nothing to eat and only water to keep him alive. The "modern-day Houdini" said: "This is the most dangerous thing I will probably ever do in my life, except for having a child."

BAD WEEK FOR:

  • Two old-age pensioners, who died after a dancer jumped out of a cake at an old-people’s home in Australia. Roger Thornton, 86, and Margaret Flinch, 91 suffered heart attacks when Elizabeth "Boom Boom" Baker jumped out of the cake revealing her extra-large bust. The cake was supposed to be delivered to a stag party but the postman misread the address.
  • Airport customs officers in Amsterdam who, alerted by the bad smell coming from a suitcase, found up to 2,000 baboon noses believed to come from Nigeria. The noses were destined for the USA where it is believed they were to be used for the manufacture of traditional medicines.
  • Brazilian women, who are the most vain in the world. According to the survey by cosmetics company Avon, half of Brazilian women are prepared to have plastic surgery to keep their beauty. 90% of Brazilian women classified beauty products as essential rather than a luxury, compared with an average of 77% in the rest of the world.
  • A 21 year-old Thai computer engineer, who faces up to five years in prison for stealing used women's underwear and selling them through his Internet website. Police found 20 pairs of well-worn underwear at the man’s apartment which he was planning to post to his clients for a charge of 5,000 baht (US$122).

STATISTICS OF THE WEEK:

  • Workers in Nairobi, Kenya must work for 185 minutes to earn enough money to buy a Big Mac, compared with 16 minutes in London and 10 minutes in Los Angeles.
  • The US operation in Iraq is costing US$1bn a week.
  • If they were reincarnated, 60% of British men would like to come back as a woman, but only 19% of women would come back as a man.
  • For the first time, the USA has more vehicles than drivers. There are 204 million vehicles, and only 191 million drivers.

I hope Jim and Sarah will manage to (1) make a go of their marriage. However, I am sure no wife or family will ever (2) come between Jim and his music. Ever since he (3) came across an old guitar in a flea market and (4) had his first go at playing it, Jim has been a fanatical guitarist.
