Weekly news from UK

GOOD WEEK FOR:

  • Tennis fans, with the news that the centre court at Wimbledon may be fitted with a giant umbrella to protect the court from rain.
  • A 12-year-old American boy, who has just won a scholarship to study medicine at the University of Chicago, where he will combine his medical studies with a Ph.D. The medical school however has decided that the student will not begin treating patients until he is at least 18 years old. Sho Timothy Yano is the son of a Korean mother and a Japanese father.
  • A cat named Tinker who is today the lucky heir of a house in London worth over half a million dollars. Margaret Layne, a childless widow, who died last year, left her home plus a Ј100,000 trust fund, to the fortunate cat until he dies, or after 21 years have passed.
  • Toilets, with the launch of the world's first portable lavatory with internet access. The "iLoo" is being built by Microsoft's internet arm MSN. The converted lavatory will feature a wireless keyboard, plasma screen and quick internet access.

BAD WEEK FOR:

  • Villagers in southern Taiwan, who are strapping bras to their faces to protect themselves against the deadly SARS virus due to a shortage of surgical masks. Face masks have disappeared from many shops as Taiwan's SARS infections tripled in the past two weeks to 360 cases, the third highest in the world after China and Hong Kong.
  • A German man, who was arrested after walking through the town of Aachen swinging the severed head of his sister-in-law by the hair. The 24-year-old man admitted stabbing the woman to death and cutting off her head with a 30cm kitchen knife.
  • Single men in Britain, who are more in debt than their female peers. The average single man aged between 25 and 39 has Ј14,910 of unsecured debt compared with Ј11,416 for a woman.
  • Obesity in Australia, which has more than doubled over the past 20 years as people give up national pastimes like surfing and walking to watch more television. The survey of 11,247 people found 39% of Australians were overweight and 20.8% obese.
  • A South African man, who died trying to cut his own head off with a butcher's saw machine in a supermarket. Police said, "He just walked in, went to the band saw machine and switched it on. He put his neck to the blade and it cut about half way through before he fell to the floor."

POLITICALLY CORRECT OR MADNESS?

A story called "The Friendly Dolphin" was rejected by one American school because it discriminates against children who do not live near the sea.

STORY OF THE WEEK:

When Aaron Ralston’s right arm became trapped under a rock on a remote mountain in Utah, USA, he took drastic action to survive. After lying under the rock for 5 days, the 27-year-old freed himself by cutting off his own arm with a pocket knife, a process which took several hours. He then abseiled down the 20m canyon wall and kept walking until he met two hikers who called for help.
