The meaning of HAD BETTER (I'D BETTER) is similar to SHOULD. I'D BETTER
DO smth.= I should do smth.
I have to meet Tom in ten minutes. I'd better go now or I'll be late.
Shall I take an umbrella? Yes, you'd better, It might rain.
We've almost run out of petrol. We'd better stop at
the next petrol station to fill up.
The negative form is HAD BETTER NOT .
You don't look very well. You'd better not go to work today.
Are you going out tonight? I'd better not. I've got a lot of
work to do.
THE FORM IS ALWAYS ' HAD BETTER' WE SAY ' HAD'
BUT THE MEANING IS PRESENT OR FUTURE. (
infinitive without TO).
6. His parents never make him study.
7. Let me help you.
8. Do you have to work very long hours?
9. I really ought to phone my mother.
10. Suddenly it started to rain.
11. Shall I carry that bag for you?
12. I would like to go out tonight.
13. What time do you expect be home?
14. We need to talk to Andy.
15. Everybody should learn Maths.
16. I let him go early as he wanted to
meet his wife.
17. Why not come and talk to her yourself?
18. Will you help me to move/ move the
bookcase?
19. I used to smoke 25 cigarettes a day.
20. May I use your phone?
These verbs can usually be followed by - ing or to + infinitive.
So you can say:
The baby began crying or The baby began to cry.
It has started raining or It has started to rain.
John intends buying a house or John intends to buy a house.
He continued working after his illness. Or he continued to
work after his
illness.
b) remember to do and remember doing.
You remember to do smth. BEFORE you do it.
I remembered to lock the door before I left but I forgot to
shut the windows. Please remember to post the letter. (=
don't forget to post it.)
You remember doing smth. AFTER you do it. I remember doing smth= I did
smth. and now I remember it.
I clearly remember loking the door before I left. ( I
locked it and now I clearly remember it.)
c) Try to do and try doing
Try to do = attempt to do, make an effort to do.
I was very tired. I tried to keep my eyes open but I couldn't . Please
to be quiet when you come home. Everyone will be asleep. Try doing.
Try also means ' do smth. as an experiment or test.
Try some of this juice- perhaps you'll like it.
We tried every hotel in the town but they were all full.
If try with this meaning is followed by a verb, we say TRY-ING.
I can't find anywhere to
live. 'Why don't you
try putting an advertisement in the newspaper.
