Dear subscribers!

I recently heard the phrase "shut up" used as an expression of surprise, disbelief or amazement. For the first time for many years the intended meaning was similar to "no way", "really?", "you've got to be kidding me", "I can't believe it" etc rather than "stop talking" or "shut your mouth". It was only clear to me from the tone and body language used that the intended meaning was something else entirely. Here are some examples of this less common usage:

  1. 1. You really got tickets to the Lakers game? Shut up!
  2. 2. What? My stupid ex got a job? Shut up!
  3. 3. You're 25 years old, Amy? Shut up! You don't look a day older than 18!

I found that interesting and I wanted to share it with you.

Best regards,
Andrey Kostenko
