Hello, dear subscribers! It's a pleasure to hear from you that you liked the short story 'The Gratuity'. You asked us to tell you a few words about the author who prefers a pseudonym: Otto Pfarrer. The following below is what he thought more or less relevant to say briefly about himself.

"My job career is over, but I worked as a journalist, translator and interpreter (Hungarian, Russian, English), and then as a teacher of English at High Schools, Colleges in Budapest and Eger, the Budapest University of Economics, and had other jobs too. I got my English teacher's diploma at the Uzhgorod State University (now Ukraine) in 1969, and my doctoral degree (doctor univ.) in English linguistics at the internationally known University of Budapest in 1986. Now I consider myself to be a diligent layman student of James Joyce. Some editors of different literary journals and magazines in Hungary seem to like my reviews on contemporary authors, and occasionally it happens that they ask me to write one for them."

GRAMMAR - The Conditionals. Continuation (the first part is in issue #132)

“Other types (apart from the three main types):

(1) Cause and effect: tenses parallel.

Oil floats if you pour it on water.
You were a fool if you went out without a hat on.

(2)A doubtful view of Conditional type 1 is emphasized by the use of should; the inverted forms are the more literary.

Should he refuse you, refer him to me.
‘If I should die, think only this of me’ (Rupert Brooke)

(3) In polite forms where the consent of another person is sought, will and would are found after if.

If you will wait a moment I’ll fetch a chair.
I should be very grateful if you would do that for me.

(4) Greater improbability in Conditional types (1) and (2) is achieved by using were to after if, and should, would, could, or might in the principal clause.

If you were to come tomorrow, I might have time to see you.

This construction must not be confused with the other use of is to = obligation, ‘must’. Compare:

If he was to return at 7 o’clock, why didn’t he?
If he were to return at 7 o’clock, he could take me out.

Conditional conjunctions: if, unless, as if, if only, supposing, suppose, provided, providing, as long as.”[1]



VOCABULARY exercises (Fill in the gap a word chosen from those in the brackets)

The mayor was sitting comfortably in his ... (smart, astute, glossy) car.
His driver started moving smoothly. He definitely had one of the best drivers who ever existed.
He tried to be ... (sound, drop, fast) asleep.
He needed to rest...(a little, little, a few, the few), otherwise depression would get him, he thought.
He felt some pain, at first in his eyes, then there it was again: the headache he started to feel was almost unbearable. All this was the usual sign ... (distributing, forecasting, predicting) his customary fits of depression.
Nevertheless he ... (kept, went, continued) thinking about his wife.
She used to look ...(spacious, swell, smart), and was always laughing and smiling before the marriage, before becoming pregnant for the first time to be more exact.
After her first child had been born she became ... (nervous, neurotic, smashing) and kept shouting at him and everybody else all the time.
Then he ... (remember, recollect, recognize) his first ... (adultery, apostasy, infidelity, perjury)
Or was it not the first but the second one? He had to ....(premise, realize, confess) that he forgot the names of most of the dames he had an affair with.
They were always just the types of women he liked: slim, almost skinny, with long legs and long hair, preferably blond. His wife knew about most of them, but she always pretended she didn’t. It was her way to have him and to survive: pretending ... (to be ignorant, misconception, ignorance).

The car ... (stopped, was stopped), he understood that now he had to see her soon.

He opened the door and went inside the house. It was suspiciously noiseless. He opened the wardrobe and wanted to put his overcoat in when he heard a hissing sound. “Sssssssssssss, it said, I’m a big snake, and I 'll bite you if you are not careful. ”
Bewildered, he answered, “I’ll just put my overcoat in.” “O.K., the snake said, but be quiet. And don't say anybody a word.”
He ... (quickly, hastily, gloatingly) closed the wardrobe and went out into the corridor.
Thinking about who on earth this snake could be, he entered the living room. The adult part of his family ...(was, were) at the table already.
His wife tried ...(to smile, smiling, and smiled).
“Hello everybody. How are you, my dear", he said. "We’ve been waiting for you,” she answered annoyed as usual.
“Where are the kids?” he asked.. "Are they playing ‘hide and seek ’ or something?" His wife didn't answer but asked in return ....(excitedly, emphatically, pathetically): "How are you?"
The question confused him. If he told the truth, and namely that he was just having a splitting headache, they’d be disappointed, or even ...(frightened, scared, lost).
He had to play the usual game of “everything is fine” again. He couldn’t allow ...(expressing, to express) how he felt, he must not by any means complain.
He was ‘the man in charge,’ responsible for the whole family. “Id like to congratulate my granddaughter and give her a present,” he said, trying to look cheerful. “It’s possible, but one has to find her at first,” her mum ...(answered, replied, snarled) nervously.
