INVITATION AND CALL FOR PAPERS
International Conference
ALL-UNITY AND UNIVERSALISM
22-25 October 2009
Bose, Italy
THEME OF THE CONFERENCE
The idea of all-unity (vseedinstvo), developed in Russian religious
thought, and its western counterpart, universalism, played an important
role in 19-20 century philosophy and theology. Being chiefly a legacy of
German romantic philosophical thought, all-unity became one of the
fundamental ideas of Russian religious philosophy and the central notion
of cultural debates in 19 - early 20 century Russia.
For Russian thinkers (such as Ivan Kireevsky, Alexei Khomiakov, Nikolai
Fyodorov, Vladimir Solovyov, Vasily Rosanov, Sergei Bulgakov, Pavel
Florensky, Semyon Frank) all-unity was the central element of total
vision of ultimate realities. On the other side, it served for them as a
means of analyzing and perceiving the works of great European thinkers.
Apart from philosophical application, attempts were made to apply the
categories of all-unity to the sphere of theology: to Trinitarian
dogmatics (Bulgakov, Florensky) and Christology (Solovyov), as well as
to anthropology, ecclesiology, moral theology and spirituality.
After the revolution of 1917, this idea was further developed in the
Russian emigration circles and occupies an important place in today's
philosophical and theological discussions in Russia and in the West. The
aim of the forthcoming Conference is to consider different aspects of
all-unity and universalism and to discuss, in particular, compatibility
of this idea with Christian views and its relevance for contemporary
interconfessional and interreligious dialogue.
In the course of the Conference, the following questions will be
addressed.
Mystical roots of all-unity in Western and Russian traditions,
Longing for wholeness (tsel'nost') in the 19 century Russian and
European culture and its peculiarities,
Moral syncretism and ethical universality in 19 and 20 century
literature, theology and philosophy,
The notion of experience in theology: 20 century theology between
esthetical intuition and existential narrative,
Neo-patristics and new icon veneration: the image of God-man as an
answer to modern nihilism,
The theme of all-unity as a meeting point for dialogue between religions
and cultures: from interconfessional polemics to ecumenical views.
The given list does not exhaust all the aspects of the conference theme
but provides a focus for expected discussions.
