There are some serious oddities in the roll call for the album, but throughout the whole, the album manages to pull itself together. The album starts out with an odd techno version of Carl Douglas' martial arts movie standard "Kung Fu Fighting," performed by Tom Jones himself. Later, Warren G contributes a reworking of the Tina Turner classic "What's Love Got to Do With It." Following in the covers department, Devo puts in a cover of Trent Reznor's "Head Like a Hole," and Siobhan Lynch puts in an eerie, dark techno version of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive." There are West Coast rap pieces from 2Pac as well as Tha Dogg Pound. Punk and ska are represented by songs from Rocket From the Crypt and No Doubt. Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell sounds oddly similar to Rob Zombie on "Caged in a Rage," and Joel McNeely finishes the album with the rock instrumental "Main Title From Supercop." While the usual course of a soundtrack involves a mixing of genres, which can often go horribly wrong when the mixing becomes incoherent, Supercop holds together remarkably well, if only because of the novel covers of various songs, and the reappearance of Devo. * Adam Greenberg, allmusic.com

Under the guidance of house producer Nick Lowe, Stiff turned out an enormous number of seminal punk and new wave singles in their first years, including classic tracks by the Damned, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, the Adverts, Ian Dury, and Lowe himself. But what really gave the label its wild, original flavor were minor artists like Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Tenpole Tudor, the Yachts, Lene Lovich, Rachel Sweet, and Mickey Jupp, who turned out a series of raw pop gems that were everything good rock & roll singles should be -- catchy, energetic, and memorable. Over 100 of Stiff's finest tracks are collected on this wonderful four-disc box set. While most of these songs weren't hits, they are classic rock & roll. The first three discs are excellent; the fourth disc contains some bright moments, but by that time, their artists were pretty much spent. It's a long work (four hours), and even by 18th-century standards, its narrative is convoluted. The athlete Magacle is competing – and cheating – in the games to win, on behalf of his friend Licida, the hand of Aristea, which her idiotic father has promised to the victor. Megacle has fallen in love with Aristea himself, however, and things are further complicated by the arrival of Licida's cast-off mistress Argene, and by the revelation that Licida is actually Aristea's long-lost twin brother. There's probably too much recitative for modern tastes, though the arias, when we get to them, are both expressively powerful and, appropriately enough, ferociously competitive. The recording was made live at last year's Innsbruck festival of early music. It's sung with great energy, if with occasional moments of strain, by an enthusiastically committed cast, among whom Jennifer Rivera's spectacular Licida and Ann-Beth Solvang's ravishingly beautiful Argene are outstanding. There's shapely conducting from Alessandro de Marchi, too.
