Dear friends,

I am pleased to introduce you the next issue of a weekly newsletter English events in Moscow.

In the beginning, a few words about this new service.

As you know, many hours of speaking and listening are needed to produce fluent speech in your second language. However, you can combine studying language with entertainment. Moreover, as you live in Moscow, you have many opportunities to do so. You can watch movies in English, you can visit English Clubs or join the company of Walkers, Hikers & Nature Lovers who speak English as well as Russian while walking on Sundays in the Moscow region.

But to participate in these activities, you should know about them. That is why the newsletter English events in Moscow had been created. Now you can regularly get information about various opportunities to improve your command of English. I do hope it will help you a lot.

1. Cinema:

Here are several English-language movies you can watch this week:

            AVP: Alien Vs. Predator (2004): Paul W.S. Arlington pits ironic movie beasts against one another in Antarctica. Dome Cinema (Kinoteatr Pod Kupolom) in the Reinessance Hotel, 18/1 Olimpiisly Prospect. Metro Prospect Mira. 931-98-73. At 6, 8 and 10 p.m.

 

      Head in the Clouds (2004): John Duigans romantic drama set in 1930s Europe stars Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz and Stuart Townsend.

      Wimbeldon (2004): A romantic comedy about a loosing tennis player who falls in love with a player from the womens circuit and turns game around.

2. English Clubs

    Moscow English Conversation Club (MECC) meets every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at 6/2 Strastnoi boulevard, Chekhov's Culture Center. The location can be reached from Chehovskaya metro station. Entrance fee - 70 rubs. Time: 6-9.30 p.m.

    English Communication Club is inviting you to the next meeting to be held on Wednesday, November 17, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dobrolubov Library 35/37 Aphanasevskii pereulok. This location can be reached from the metro station Arbatskaya. Program will be as usual: conversations and a tea-break in the middle of the meeting. Join your colleagues and friends for a productive, enjoyable evening of networking at the Wednesday AfterWork MeetingPoint. The event is held at the Boar House from 19:00 until 22:00 every Wednesday. The International Women's Club Moscow will hold its Monthly General Meeting on Thursday, November, 18 from 10:00 to 12:00 at Glav UpDK Cultural Centre, Olafa Palme st., 5, bldg. 2. 3. Walkers, Hikers & Nature Lovers

If you want to combine a pleasant walk, communication with nice people and practicing your command of English, join Walkers, Hikers & Nature Lovers.

Members of this club meet every Sunday to make a one-day walk in the Moscow region. The group of hikers goes by train from Moscow for 30-40 minutes (max 1 hour). Then they walk in the forest, breathe fresh air, enjoy sightseeing and communicate both in English and in Russian. Usually they visit some places of interest such as museums, churches and so on. During the hike there is a break for lunch. They come back to Moscow at about 17-19 p.m. (the time can vary). The distance they walk is about 10-15 km.

      Group hike at a normal pace so that an average person can walk without difficulty. Rain or shine, they don't use any other transport besides the train. They don't need to have any special abilities or special equipment for the walk.

This week Walkers, hikers and nature lovers meet at the center of the platform inside Begovaya metro station (purple line) at 8:30 (Please dont be late - the train departure is at 8:53) on Sunday, November 14 to hike from Odintsove to Shchukinskaya metro station(28 kms). The route will be wet at this time of the year and boots are advisable. Leader will be Andrei Klimov. 4. Schedule of events in the Library for Foreign Literature.

All events at EFL are free and open to the public.

To attend you need a LFL library card or a one-day pass to the LFL.

November 16, Tuesday. 2 p.m. EAC Lecture: Education in the US.

November 16, Tuesday. 3:30 p.m. EAC Lecture: TOEFL and SAT.

November 16, Tuesday. American Play Reading: Time and Beast with Marina Shron, Fulbright Scholar.

November 17, Wednesday. 4-6 p.m. Lecture: What is a Liberal Arts Education? With Anywhere Sikochi and Luke Stratton.

November 17, Wednesday: American conversation Cafe with Junior Officers.

 

5. Church services

St. Louis Roman Catholic Church holds Sunday services in English at 9:30 p.m. at 12A Malaya Lubyanka Ulitsa. For more information, including a map and directions, please visit our web site at www. stlouis.ru

 

6. Lecture

A lecture to be held on November 12 titled: "Bad News from Russia: Why Fearful Journalists cant Report the News" by lecturer Martha Stephens, Visiting Professor, Moscow State University, Chair of business and Finansial Journalism, University of Missouri; at 7 p.m. at Chekhov Library Cultural Center, Strastnoi Bulvar, 6 metro Chekhovskaya (go thru the tunnel, take first door on left). Cost 50 rubles.
