Today we are glad to shed some light on a wonderful opportunity for young people from different corners of the world that is called International Experience Canada (IEC). IEC allows you to travel and work in Canada for up to a year or you may be even granted a 2 years visa if you qualify.

We will share some tips on what documents you need to gather as well as on what you need to know about employment in Canada.

We will get into a detail regarding the new 2 year IEC travel insurance coverage that was recently introduced by several private Canadian insurance companies.

IEC Participant Check List

 

 Things you need to get in order:

  • Your visa in your passport- make a copy of each document and keep in your email;
  • Plane tickets- check for best prices, expedia.com is a good reference point;
  • Travel insurance- get coverage for the duration of your stay, according to IEC rules;
  • Find a place to stay when you arrive- search google maps for a hostel- they usually are quite affordable if you share with others; some even offer breakfast!
  • Grab a list with references- it will be invaluable while looking for a job or an apartment.
  • Drivers license, student card other id’s- at least have a copy in you bag
  • Work on your resume and cover letter- it’s a lot easier to put it together from home!

What do I need to know about employment?

Make sure you have your resume ready for the job hunt. It’s important that you stick to the resume standards that are used in Canada.

  • Keep your resume short with a maximum of 2 pages if you have a lot of relevant experience. Don’t write too much about your education and don’t include your academic grades.
  • Do not include personal details such as date of birth or marital status
  • Check if your qualification is recognized in Canada before you go. You can do this through the website of the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials

 Two Year IEC Travel Insurance Coverage

In order to obtain the IEC visa the applicants must present a proof of insurance coverage for the duration of their stay.
