FAQ:Canada Travel Insurance

What kind of coverage is included in travel insurance?

There are many variations of travel insurance plans. Some typical coverages include the following:

1. Coverage for vacation and trip cancellation

2. Coverage for travel interruptions, delays and cancellations

3. Coverage for missed connections

4. Coverage for medical emergency; dental emergency; other health-related expenses (often including medical evacuation coverage)

5. Coverage for expenses due to lost or delayed baggage

6. Coverage for accidental death or dismemberment.

If you purchase travel insurance, you should examine what is covered under your own plan.

What is not covered?

What is not covered can be as important as what is covered. It is recommended that you examine your cover

age carefully and learn what is not covered. For example:

1. Cancellation for war is probably not covered

2. Cancellation for terrorism may be covered if your destination has experienced recent (often within 30 days) terror attacks

3. Cancellation because of bad weather is likely to be covered only if the weather is extremely threatening. If airlines have stopped flying to the area, for example.

4. Cancellation because of an outbreak of disease will likely not be covered.

What benefits is gained by purchasing trip insurance?

Many things cannot be anticipated. Trip insurance can provide some financial protection if you have to cancel because you or a traveling companion or immediate family member suffers an injury or sickness or death, or if you need emergency assistance during the trip.

Are pre-existing conditions a problem?

Yes, this is a frequent problem area. You should be sure you understand what your policy says about pre-existing conditions beforehand if you have any medical conditions.

Unstable pre-existing conditions that may flare up during your trip are generally not covered. But, some premium plans include a feature that will cover a sudden recurrence of a pre-existing condition. What constitutes a pre-existing condition varies from policy to policy.

Some travel insurance policies will waive exclusions (i.e. they will cover pre-existing conditions) if you buy your insurance close to the time (often within a couple of weeks) that you paid for your trip.

Again, it is recommended that you know how your particular policy handles pre-existing conditions so you know what to expect. For example, many cruise line policies do not cover pre-existing conditions.

Isn’t travel insurance an unnecessary expense? Do many people actually get paid for their claims?

A recent estimate indicates that between 5% and 10% of people who buy travel insurance actually file claims against the coverage. Some claims for expensive trips or cruises can be for significant amounts of money that the traveler might otherwise have to pay out of his or her own pocket, if not for trip or travel insurance.

Your prepaid expenses would likely be covered by your travel insurance plan if you are prevented from taking your trip by reasons such as:

What are some reasons for canceling my trip that would generally be covered under airline trip cancellation coverage?

1. Sickness, injury or death to you or your traveling companion, or a close family member of you or your traveling companion

2. A strike or severe weather that causes the airline or other common carrier to stop all service for a specified period of time (often 4 days or more)

3. Fire, flood or other unforeseen event that destroys your home or your travelling companion’s home, or burglary of your home or your traveling companion’s home within a specified number of days before the start of your trip

4. Criminal assault against you or your traveling companion within a specified number of days before the start of your trip

5. Terrorist attack in a city you are scheduled to visit within a specified number of days before the trip is to begin

6. Your unavoidable requirement to appear as a witness in a court case (not involving your travelling companion), or if you must be present for jury duty, or if you are detained for other unforeseen causes such as being highjacked or subjected to a medical quarantine

7. You or your travelling companion are called to emergency military duty (usually for a national disaster but not a war)

8. You or your travelling companion are prevented from taking the trip because of a traffic accident on the way to the departure point

9. Your trip is cancelled by the travel company

You should read carefully all the provisions of the coverage to know exactly what you are buying.

Is Portability important? By Elana Rendell, AMP
Job Search in BC. Accountant.

Selling your current home and moving into a new one can be stressful enough, let alone worrying about your current mortgage and whether you’re able to carry it over to your new home.

Porting enables you to move to another property without having to lose your existing interest rate, mortgage balance and term. And, better yet, the ability to port also saves you money by avoiding early discharge penalties.

It’s important to note, however, that not all mortgages are portable. When it comes to fixed-rate mortgage products, you usually have a portability option. Lenders often use a “blended” system where your current mortgage rate stays the same on the mortgage amount ported over to the new property and the new balance is calculated using the current interest rate.

With variable-rate mortgages, on the other hand, porting is usually not available. As such, upon breaking your existing mortgage, a three-month interest penalty will be charged. This charge may or may not be reimbursed with your new mortgage.

Porting conditions

While porting typically ensures no penalty will be charged when you sell your existing property and buy a new one, some conditions that may apply include:

∙ Some lenders allow you to port your mortgage, but your sale and purchase have to happen on the same day. Other lenders offer a week to do this, some a month, and others up to three months.

∙ Some lenders don’t allow a changed term or force you into a longer term as part of agreeing to port your mortgage.

∙ Some lenders will, in fact, reimburse your entire penalty whether you are a fixed or variable borrower if you simply get a new mortgage with the same lender – replacing the one being discharged. Additionally, some lenders will even allow you to move into a brand new term of your choice and start fresh.

∙ There are instances where it’s better to pay a penalty at the time of selling and get into a new term at a brand new rate that could save back your penalty over the course of the new term.

While this may sound like a complicated subject, I can explain all of your options and help you select the right mortgage based on your own specific needs.

Interest rates are the lowest they’ve been in history and they have nowhere to go but up. Industry professionals believe that as rates begin to rise, they’ll continue to rise for some time.
