Первый раз в первый класс or education in the UK

  Hello, dear friends!

In the UK (В Великобритании) дети start primary school (идут в начальную школу), когда им исполняется 5.

The majority (большинство - около 90%) of schools in the UK (школ в Великобритании) are public (государственные), which means they are paid for (оплачиваются) by the government (правительством), и образование is free (бесплатное). Некоторые из этих школ являются boarding schools (школапансион) where children study, eat and sleep (где дети учатся, питаются и ночуют). Школьный год обычно is divided into 3 terms (делится на 3 четверти).

If you want to enter the university (Если хотите поступить в университет), you have to take exams (сдавать экзамен).

Dialogues

Part 1

JZ: Hello, Nick. Thank you for agreeing to talk to me. So, could you tell me a little bit about the college where you work?

NH: Bournemouth and Poole College is a very large FE (Further Education) college within the UK, we have 12000 students. And that’s made up of about three and a half thousand 16 to 18 year-olds which are the UK EU students doing full time courses. We do HE (Higher Education) programmes, we do some foundation degrees, HND (Higher National Diplomas) and stuff like that. We also have apprenticeships, we have quite a big apprenticeship body. We have an international department, within the international department we have about three hundred students coming through from all different countries in the world, majority of the students I have at the moment in terms of numbers is probably China. But I have a smattering of them from everywhere else. We had a student from Uzbekistan last year, he did an access course. And our international offer very much is in two parts I suppose like most colleges like us. We have our full time one year programmes, which are very much our access programmes.

JZ: Okay.

NH: And those access programmes are very popular with students who want to get into British universities. So what they tend to do, they will come to us before they do their A-level equivalent in their own country, and they’ll come here to either do A-levels or to do an access programme in the UK, which then will obviously give them sufficient UCAS points to get into a university.

JZ: Does it include English as well?

NH: Yeah, yeah, we do English is part of that. I mean generally people need to have an IELTS 5.0 to get on those programmes.

JZ: Five is not too bad actually.

NH: Yeah, to get on there. But obviously what they need to be able to do within the year they’re with us is to get up to six to enter the university.

JZ: Alright!

NH: So yeah, our programmes are access programmes with English. It’s about 24 hours a week. Of which just under probably 12 hours is English and the rest is the vocation. So that’s the way we operate that. And we have something like… on our access programmes over 90% of the students who do the programmes get into a British university.

JZ: That’s quite high!

NH: Yeah, that’s quite high. We do actually, which you might be interested to know, we do something that… we’re the only public funded college to do, and that is… we do University of London international programme.

JZ: I’ve seen that on the website. That’s quite cool, isn’t it?

NH: That you do… you are required to have IELTS of 6.0 to come on. But this is very much a programme that opens the door for some of the more prestigious universities. It is very newly placed, the programme, so a lot of the students who come on it very much want to go on LSE, you know, London School of Economics, they’ll often have that as an aim, and this is often a very good way to kind of go in. And we have a lot of students that are interviewed. It is a very strict entering criteria for LSE as you probably know, cause it’s not actually very big university, it’s very small.

JZ: Right, okay.

NH: But we have got students, our international students onto there. And all the qualifications they do on our access courses are qualifications in their own right. So we’re not like some of the private colleges such as Caplan and places like that, where their qualification doesn’t have a value in terms of… on your CV as a qualification. Ours do. Because obviously they are free standing in their own right. Cause, I don’t know if you’ve heard, there’s awarding body called CAVA (Cambridge Access Validating Agency), which is the awarding body for majority of our access courses.

To be continued...

What do you think the following words mean?

A-level -
Full-time course -
Foundation degree -
Vocation -
Access course -
IELTS -
UCAS -
