Дорогие читатели!

Сегодня мы продолжаем разбирать рассказ Джека Лондона - «Закон Жизни» (“The Law of Life” by Jack London). Книги Джека Лондона написаны не самым простым языком, но я уверена что мы справимся. Такая красота (языка) стоит этого.

“The Law of Life”

1. The mosquitoes vanished with the first frost. (Комары исчезают при первых заморозках.) 2.The little tree-squirrel crawled away to die. (Маленькая белка уползает умирать.) 3.When age settled upon the rabbit it became slow and heavy, and could no longer outfoot its enemies. (С годами заяц становится медленнее и тяжеле и больше не может ускакать от врага.) 4. Even the big bald-face grew clumsy and blind and quarrelsome, in the end to be dragged down by a handful of yelping huskies. (Даже медведь слепнет к старости, становится неуклюжим и в конце концов свора визгливых собак одолевает его.) 5. He remembered how he had abandoned his own father on an upper reach of the Klondike one winter, the winter before the missionary came with his talk-books and his box of medicines. (Коскуш вспомнил, как он сам бросил своего отца в верховьях Клондайка, - это было той зимой, когда к ним пришел миссионер со своими молитвенниками и ящиком лекарств.) 6. Many a time had Koskoosh smacked his lips over the recollection of that box, though now his mouth refused to moisten. (Не раз облизывал Коскуш губы при воспоминании об этом ящике, но сейчас у него во рту уже не было слюны.) 7. The "painkiller" had been especially good. (В особенности вспоминался ему "болеутолитель".) 8. But the missionary was a bother after all, for he brought no meat into the camp, and he ate heartily, and the hunters grumbled. But he chilled his lungs on the divide by the Mayo, and the dogs afterwards nosed the stones away and fought over his bones. VOCABULARY

1. mosquitoes - комары
vanished – исчезают, пропадают
The mosquitoes vanished with the first frost.

2. crawled away – уползает
The little tree-squirrel crawled away to die.

3. age settled upon – годы берут верх (годы берут своё, с годами, со временем)
outfoot - унести ноги, здесь: ускакать
When age settled upon the rabbit it became slow and heavy, and could no longer outfoot its enemies.

4. bald-face - с белым пятном на лбу
grew clumsy - становится неповоротливым
blind - слепой
quarrelsome - вздорный, задиристый, ворчливый
Even the big bald-face grew clumsy and blind and quarrelsome, in the end to be dragged down by a handful of yelping huskies.

5. talk-books - молитвенники
He remembered how he had abandoned his own father on an upper reach of the Klondike one winter, the winter before the missionary came with his talk-books and his box of medicines.

6. many a time – не раз
smacked his lips – причмокивать от удовольствия
to moisten - увлажнять
Many a time had Koskoosh smacked his lips over the recollection of that box, though now his mouth refused to moisten.

7. painkiller – обезболивающее средство
The "painkiller" had been especially good.

8. was a bother – был обузой
ate heartily – ел много
But the missionary was a bother after all, for he brought no meat into the camp, and he ate heartily, and the hunters grumbled.

9. chilled his lungs – простудился
nosed the stones away – разбросали камни
But he chilled his lungs on the divide by the Mayo, and the dogs afterwards nosed the stones away and fought over his bones.

TENSES

Форма “had done” использована, чтобы показать, что до того момента в прошлом, о котором идет речь (тот момент в истории, о котором сейчас идёт речь), что-то случилось, закончилось, имело место (его уже оставили).

3. could no longer outfoot - больше не может ускакать
