INTRODUCTION
Дорогие читатели!
Сегодня мы продолжаем нашу работу над первой частью повести Ричарда Баха – Чайка по имени Джонатан Ливингстон.
“JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL”

1. He didn't know why, for instance, but when he flew at altitudes less
than half his wingspan above the water, he could stay in the air longer,
with less effort. (Он не знал почему, например, когда он летел над водой на высоте меньше чем пол размаха своих крыльев, он мог держаться в воздухе дольше и с меньшими усилиями) 2. His glides ended not with the usual feet-down splash
into the sea, but with a long flat wake as he touched the surface with his
feet tightly streamlined against his body. (Его планирующие спуски заканчивались не обычным падением с брызгами в море как когда он вытягивал лапы вниз в воду, а длинной ровной пенящейся полосой когда он дотрагивался до воды лапами плотно прижатыми к телу) 3. When he began sliding in to
feet-up landings on the beach, then pacing the length of his slide in the
sand, his parents were very much dismayed indeed. (Когда он начал сколжение для посадки с поджатыми ногами на песчанном берегу, и потом измеряя шагами его длинну в песке, его родители не на шутку встревожились)
4. "Why, Jon, why?" his mother asked ("Почему, Джон, ну почему?" спрашивала его мать). 5. "Why is it so hard to be like the
rest of the flock, Jon? ("Почему это так сложно - быть как остальная стая, Джон?") 6. Why can't you leave low flying to the pelicans,
the albatross? ("Почему ты не можешь оставить низкие полёты пеликанам и альбатросам?") 7. Why don't you eat? ("Почему ты не ешь?") 8. Son, you're bone and feathers!" ("Сынок, ты - кости да перья!")
9. "I don't mind being bone and feathers mom. ("Ну и пусть кости да перья, мам") 10. I just want to know what I
can do in the air and what I can't, that's all. ("Я просто хочу знать что я могу делать в воздухе и что не могу") 11. I just want to know." ("Я просто хочу знать")
12. "See here Jonathan " said his father not unkindly. ("Послушай, Джонатан" сказал его отец без недоброжелательности) 13. "Winter isn't far
away. ("Зима не за горами.") 14. Boats will be few and the surface fish will be swimming deep. ("Лодок будет мало и рыба, которая обычно живёт на поверхности, будет плавать глубоко") 15. If you
must study, then study food, and how to get it. ("Если тебе обязательно нужно учиться, изучай еду и как её добыть") 16. This flying business is
all very well, but you can't eat a glide, you know. ("Все эти полёты - это всё очень хорошо, но, ты же не сможешь съесть планирующий спуск, понимаешь") 17. Don't you forget that
the reason you fly is to eat." ("Не забывай что ты летаешь для того чтобы есть")
VOCABULARY
1. altitude – высота
wingspan – размах крыльев
effort – усилие He didn't know why, for instance, but when he flew at altitudes less than half his wingspan above the water, he could stay in the air longer, with less effort.
2. glide – планирующий спуск
splash - плеск, брызги
wake – то, что напоминает след от корабля
streamline – придавать обтекаемую форму His glides ended not with the usual feet-down splash into the sea, but with a long flat wake as he touched the surface with his feet tightly streamlined against his body.
3. slide – скользить
landing - посадка
dismayed – потрясённый, испуганный When he began sliding in to
feet-up landings on the beach, then pacing the length of his slide in the

5. flock – стая "Why is it so hard to be like the rest of the flock, Jon?
PEDANTIC PART

2. feet-down - ногами вперёд, вниз His glides ended not with the usual feet-down splash
into the sea, but with a long flat wake as he touched the surface with his

"I don't mind being bone and feathers mom. I just want to know what I
can do in the air and what I can't, that's all. I just want to know."
"See here Jonathan " said his father not unkindly. "Winter isn't far
away. Boats will be few and the surface fish will be swimming deep. If you
must study, then study food, and how to get it. This flying business is
all very well, but you can't eat a glide, you know. Don't you forget that
the reason you fly is to eat."
