STEVER BALLMER will be doing his dancing monkey dance at the news of his company's victory in an advertising dispute over Internet Explorer's popularity. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that Microsoft did not tell porkies when its advert proclaimed that Internet Explorer 8 is the most widely used browser, evah. The complaint the ASA received about the Microsoft advert that ran from May to July this year claimed that Firefox is used by way more people than silly IE8.

(NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending September 2010. The report ranked the leading mobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and smartphone operating system (OS) platforms in the U.S. according to their share of current mobile subscribers ages 13 and older, and reviewed the most popular activities and content accessed via the subscriber’s primary mobile phone. The September report found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 23.5 percent market share, while RIM led among smartphone platforms with 37.3 percent market share.

Facebook quietly introduced an "Unlike Page" button into its News Feed recently, which allows users to opt-out of receiving unwanted messages from pages they had previously said they "liked." Now, when a user clicks the "X" button to remove a story from their News Feed, there's an option to unlike the page, which joins other options including "mark as spam, "hide this post," or "hide all" posts from the offending page.

Apple's plans to extend iTunes samples appeared to be moving forward Tuesday night as music publisher Symphonic Distribution said it had been told song samples would grow from 30 seconds to 90 seconds. Any song longer than two minutes and 30 seconds will automatically get the longer preview time. The deal for now is known only to affect the US and would be mandatory, as keeping music on the store would automatically grant permission.

Thirty-three contributors to the OpenOffice.org project are leaving, unhappy with what they say is Oracle's attitude toward the project's organization and management. The contributors, who are mostly from the German-speaking OpenOffice.org community, comprise translators, others in marketing and quality assurance and at least one developer. They will join others who are backing The Document Foundation, which was founded in September to continue the project outside OpenOffice.org, now under the purview of Oracle.

Global brand vendors are expected to launch their new generation smartbooks featuring the Google Chrome operating system (OS) later this month (November), while Google also plans to launch its own-brand Chrome notebook with a similar strategy as its Nexus One smartphone, according to sources from component players. Google's Chrome notebook is expected to be manufactured by Inventec with initial shipments to reach 60,000-70,000 units. The Google Chrome notebook will feature an ARM-based platform and will not be selling through retail channels.

We covered the Table Connect for iPhone (a 58-inch surface that mirrors your iPhone screen) a few days ago, and now the developers posted a video of the “device” in action: as you can see in the video above, the table requires you to start an app on the iPhone (likely available through jailbreak) and plug in the cable.
